An overview of the Hertha players on International duty
The Bundesliga is on hold and the World Cup is upon us. For one Herthaner, the 22nd edition of the World Cup will be particularly special. Goalkeeper Oliver Christensen has been selected for Denmark and will represent our club in Qatar from 20th November. The goalkeeper expressed his excitement about the tournament after the 2-0 home win over Köln: “Who will in the World Cup? Denmark! If that actually happened, we’d have the longest celebration ever back home and I wouldn’t back in Berlin until February!”
Christensen up against “favourite opponent” France, still a chance for Lukébakio
Christensen’s Denmark have been drawn in Group D and will come up against Tunisia (Tuesday, 22nd November, 14:00 CET), France (Saturday, 26th November, 17:00 CET) and Australia (Wednesday, 30th November, 16:00 CET). The Danes will particularly looking forward to their clash against the reigning World champions, who will be accompanied by former Herthaner Mattéo Guendouzi. Denmark beat France twice in the most recent instalment of the UEFA Nations League and took a point off the would-be winners in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.
Despite his seven goals and his strong start to the season, Dodi Lukébakio wasn’t nominated for Belgium. Our number 14, however, may still have quiet hopes of making in Qatar as he is on stand-by as a replacement.
Two players with friendlies, four away with the DFB youth teams
Two other Hertha players are also away with their respective national teams; Peter Pekarík with Slovakia and Stevan Jovetić with Montenegro. The players could even face-off on 17th November when their two countries go head-to-head (18:00 CET). Jovetić’s Montenegro also have a friendly with Slovenia to look forward to, whereas Pekarík’s Slovakia are set to face Chile and Slovenia.
There are also plenty of youth players in action over the break. Márton Dárdai will come up against Italy in Ancona with the Germany U21s and Tjark Ernst is part of the U20s squad that will come up against Czech Republic, Norway and Portugal. Derry Scherhant is on standby. Linus Gechter and Lukas Ullrich have also been selected for the U19s, who have three matches against Poland, Malta and Portugal to look forward to. Julian Eitschberger and Joel da Silva Kiala have been called up as reserves. There are also a number of other players from the academy who have been selected for the DFB’s younger age groups.
