Jean-Paul Boëtius is a Herthaner!

Hertha have completed a new signing with plenty of Bundesliga experience in Jean-Paul Boëtius. The attacking midfielder joins the Blue-Whites with immediate effect, signing a contract until 2025. “Jean-Paul Boëtius has played in the Bundesliga for four years and in Mainz his qualities were regularly there for all to see. He is a model professional, knows our coach from his time at Mainz, and with this the brand of football that we want to play. It is a stroke of luck for us that a player with such ability and experience of the league was available on a free transfer. We’re really happy that he decided to join Hertha,” said board member for sport Fredi Bobic of Boëtius. The new signing himself is also hungry to get involved in Berlin, “I am really looking forward to playing for Hertha and to the new Bundesliga season. This team has potential and I would like to play my part in us playing good football on the pitch and giving the fans something to cheer about!” said the 28-year-old, who will wear the number 10 shirt. The playmaker is the 16th player in our history from the Netherlands. Until now, Brazil was the foreign country best represented among Hertha players (also 16).

After 96 appearances, in which he contributed 26 goals and 52 assists, Boëtius signed a two-year deal at FC Basel. In both of his two years at the Swiss club he succeeded in winning the league title. Following a loan to Genk in Belgium in January 2017, the midfielder rejoined his boyhood club Feyenoord that summer, managing to lift the KNVB Beker during this time. In summer 2018 the 28-year-old made the step up to the Bundesliga with a transfer to Mainz. During this time, Boetuis, who has played in the both Champions League and the Europa League during his career, was a regular starter under Sandro Schwarz. He pulled on a Mainz shirt in 122 out of 136 possible Bundesliga games in a four-year spell, scoring 12 goals and recording a further 22 assists. He also made seven appearances in the DFB-Pokal, with a goal and assist apiece. Since the end of his contract in the summer, the Netherlands international has been keeping fit at his hometown club in Rotterdam.
